KDF Launches Major Housing Project for Officers in Karen

Thousands of Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) officers are set to benefit from a major housing project launched in Nairobi’s Karen area, as the military moves to address a long-standing accommodation shortage that has forced many service members to live outside barracks.

The project was officially launched on Thursday, January 8, during a groundbreaking ceremony led by Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri. The event marked a significant milestone in efforts to improve the welfare of KDF personnel and enhance operational readiness across the country.

According to the KDF, the new housing facility forms part of a broader national programme aimed at closing an estimated deficit of about 59,200 housing units within Kenya’s defence infrastructure. The shortage has, over the years, compelled thousands of officers and their families to seek private accommodation, a situation military leadership says has negatively affected morale, wellbeing, and focus on duty.

Speaking during the ceremony, General Kahariri underscored the importance of adequate housing in sustaining a motivated and effective force. He noted that providing officers with decent living conditions is not only a welfare issue but also a strategic investment in national security.

“This project reflects the power of collective effort, and I commend all stakeholders for their commitment,” General Kahariri said.
“I urge the contractor to strictly adhere to the approved timelines, uphold the highest quality standards, and prioritise safety at every stage of construction to ensure successful and timely delivery.”

The Karen housing facility will feature modern residential units designed to contemporary standards, complete with supporting amenities intended to create a safe, comfortable, and family-friendly environment for officers. KDF officials said the project is expected to be completed within one year, after which it will significantly ease accommodation pressure in Nairobi and surrounding areas.

Military planners say the housing shortage has had broader implications beyond logistics. Officers living far from their duty stations often face long commutes, increased living costs, and separation from fellow service members, factors that can contribute to stress and reduced morale. The new development is expected to help reverse these challenges by bringing officers closer to their workplaces and support systems.

The Karen project is part of a wider KDF housing programme being implemented nationwide through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Under the initiative, the government is currently constructing 3,069 modern housing units across key military installations. These include 500 units in Roysambu, 952 units in Lanet, Nakuru County, and 788 units in Kwa Mbuzi, Laikipia County.

In June 2025, the government further strengthened the programme by reserving 20 per cent of all units under the national Affordable Housing Programme for members of the disciplined forces. The move was aimed at ensuring that military and other uniformed officers benefit directly from the country’s broader housing agenda.

Through the scheme, eligible officers can access home loans at significantly subsidised interest rates, with social housing loans offered at rates as low as 3 per cent per annum and affordable housing loans capped at 6 per cent. Defence officials say these favourable terms are intended to make home ownership more accessible to officers across different ranks.

The Ministry of Defence has maintained that improving housing is a key pillar of its long-term strategy to enhance service delivery, attract skilled personnel, and retain experienced officers. With several housing projects underway, KDF leadership says it remains committed to ensuring that the welfare of service members keeps pace with the demands placed on them.

As construction begins in Karen, many officers have expressed optimism that the project will mark a turning point in addressing one of the military’s most persistent welfare challenges.
