Kenya Railways Announces Suspension of Nairobi–Limuru Commuter Train Services
Kenya Railways has announced the temporary suspension of the Nairobi–Limuru Commuter Rail Service, a move set to affect thousands of daily commuters who rely on the route for transport between Limuru and Nairobi’s Central Business District.
In a public notice issued on Thursday, January 8, the corporation said the commuter train will not operate on Friday, January 9, 2026, citing what it described as unavoidable circumstances. Kenya Railways did not disclose the specific reasons behind the suspension, prompting concern and uncertainty among regular passengers.
“The Nairobi Commuter Rail Service train that normally plies the Nairobi Central Station to the Limuru route in the morning and evening will not run tomorrow, January 9, 2026, due to unavoidable circumstances,” the notice read.

The Limuru commuter service operates under the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, offering morning and evening trips that ferry workers, students, and traders between Kiambu County and the capital. The route is particularly popular due to its affordability, reliability, and ability to bypass Nairobi’s chronic traffic congestion.
The sudden interruption is expected to significantly inconvenience commuters, many of whom are resuming normal work and school routines following the end of the festive season. Passengers expressed concern that alternative transport options, such as buses and matatus, are often slower, more expensive, and subject to unpredictable delays caused by traffic.
Despite the disruption, Kenya Railways reassured the public that the suspension is temporary. The corporation confirmed that normal operations on the Nairobi–Limuru route are scheduled to resume on Monday, January 12, 2026.
In the notice signed by Managing Director Philip Mainga, Kenya Railways expressed regret over the inconvenience and urged passengers to make alternative travel arrangements during the suspension period.
“Service will resume on Monday, January 12, 2026. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused,” the statement added.
The Nairobi Commuter Rail Service plays a critical role in easing pressure on the city’s road network by providing faster and safer transport for thousands of commuters each day. Transport experts note that commuter rail has become an increasingly important component of Nairobi’s urban mobility strategy, especially as the city grapples with population growth and limited road expansion.

Unlike road-based public transport, commuter trains offer predictable travel times and reduce exposure to traffic jams, making them a preferred option for many salaried workers and students. The Limuru line, in particular, serves as a lifeline for residents of Kiambu County who work or study in the capital.
While Kenya Railways did not elaborate on the nature of the “unavoidable circumstances,” the corporation has in the past temporarily suspended services due to technical issues, maintenance works, or safety concerns. Analysts say clearer communication on such disruptions can help passengers plan better and maintain public confidence in rail transport.
As commuters adjust their travel plans for Friday, calls have emerged for Kenya Railways to provide timely updates and consider additional support measures, such as advance notice or coordination with other transport providers during service interruptions.
For now, affected passengers are advised to seek alternative means of transport and monitor official Kenya Railways communication channels for further updates as the resumption date approaches.
