Senator Karungo wa Thangwa Breaks Silence on Gachagua’s Absence from Raila Odinga’s State Farewell

As the nation continues to mourn the passing of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, one absence at his grand state farewell has left many Kenyans talking — that of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

While thousands gathered at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, October 17, to celebrate Raila’s life, Gachagua was notably missing. The event drew Kenya’s top political figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, and Fred Matiang’i, yet Gachagua’s empty seat raised eyebrows and sparked intense public debate.

Karungo wa Thangwa: ‘It Was a Mark of Respect’

Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thangwa, a close ally of the former DP, has finally explained the reason behind the absence. Speaking to the press on Saturday, Karungo dismissed speculations of defiance or political snub.

“Gachagua is not just another politician,” he said firmly.
“He is one of the most consequential leaders of our time. It is precisely because of that stature that he chose not to attend the public farewell.”

The senator emphasized that Gachagua’s decision was intentional and deeply thoughtful, describing it as a gesture of statesmanship rather than indifference.

“His presence could have shifted attention away from Raila’s legacy to political debates,” Karungo explained.
“He wanted the spotlight to remain where it truly belonged — on Raila’s journey, sacrifice, and contribution.”

‘The Day Was Not About Politics’

According to the senator, Gachagua’s silence and absence were acts of humility, meant to protect the dignity of the occasion.

“The day was not about politics, alliances, or rivalries,” Karungo noted.
“It was about Kenya coming together to honour a towering figure in our history.”

He further argued that by stepping aside, Gachagua demonstrated a new kind of political maturity rarely seen in Kenya’s divisive climate.

“It was maturity,” Karungo added.
“It was the kind of quiet leadership that puts the nation before the individual and the moment before the microphone.”

Mixed Reactions Across the Nation

Despite the senator’s explanation, Kenyans remain divided. Some believe Gachagua should have attended the ceremony as a show of unity, while others praised him for exercising restraint during an emotionally charged event.

Karungo addressed these reactions with calm resolve, saying the criticism only underscored Gachagua’s political influence and importance.

“The fact that people noticed his absence shows his significance,” he remarked.
“It proves that Gachagua matters in Kenya’s political conversation.”

A Nation Reflects on Leadership and Legacy

As Kenya prepares for Raila’s final journey to Bondo, the debate surrounding Gachagua’s decision continues. Yet, amid the emotion and speculation, Karungo’s words resonate — leadership is sometimes about knowing when to speak and when to stay silent.

“True leaders don’t always stand at the podium,” the senator concluded.
“Sometimes, they lead by stepping back and letting history shine.”
