“No Woman Should Die Giving Life”: Duale Unveils Bold Plan to End Maternal Deaths

A wave of emotion swept across the country on Saturday night as Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced a powerful new campaign aimed at saving mothers’ lives. The initiative, titled “No Woman Should Die While Giving Life”, seeks to tackle Kenya’s alarming maternal mortality rates head-on.

“No Mother Should Die”—Duale Declares War on Maternal Deaths

Speaking passionately, Duale emphasized the urgency of the crisis. He vowed that no woman should enter a hospital healthy and leave in a coffin.

“No mother who visits any of our health care centres, not as a patient but healthy and happy, should die,” Duale stated.

He explained that the strategy will focus on improving access to skilled birth attendants, enhancing healthcare systems, and ensuring quality care for every expectant mother.

“We are introducing deliberate actions to improve access to skilled birth attendants and better healthcare,” he added.

County-by-County Funding to Target High-Risk Areas

Duale revealed that the campaign will be funded on a county-by-county basis. This approach ensures that counties with the highest maternal death rates receive urgent attention.

“Over 20 counties are on our radar for high maternal mortality,” he disclosed.

He stressed that localized funding will allow tailored solutions, especially in areas with poor infrastructure and limited medical personnel.

“Start Early”—Duale Urges Women to Seek Prenatal Care

In addition to government efforts, Duale called on women to take charge of their health. He urged expectant mothers to begin prenatal care early and remain consistent throughout their pregnancy.

“We urge our women to start prenatal care early,” he said. “Attend postpartum visits to prevent and treat complications,” he added.

His remarks followed a heartbreaking Citizen TV report that exposed the rising number of women dying during childbirth, even after seeking hospital care.

Hospitals Struggle as Postpartum Deaths Rise

The report highlighted postpartum haemorrhage as the leading cause of maternal deaths. Many hospitals lack blood banks, trained staff, and ambulances—making it nearly impossible to save lives in emergencies.

“Most hospitals lack the resources to stop deaths caused by excessive bleeding,” Duale acknowledged.

He promised that the new campaign would address these gaps and ensure no woman dies due to preventable complications.

“We must act now. Every life matters,” he concluded.

As the nation watches, this campaign could mark a turning point in Kenya’s maternal health crisis.
