Drama Unfolds as Nairobi Speaker Rejects Githurai MCA’s Resignation Over Missing Signature
A political storm is brewing in Nairobi County Assembly after Speaker Kennedy Ng’ondi rejected the resignation of Githurai MCA Deonysias Mwangi. The Speaker declared the resignation null and void, citing procedural flaws.
Resignation Letter Sparks Controversy
On Friday, September 19, Ng’ondi revealed that Mwangi’s resignation letter lacked a signature, making it invalid.
“I have not accepted the resignation. The letter was unsigned and therefore not official,” Ng’ondi stated.
Mwangi had reportedly submitted the letter on Wednesday, September 17. However, the Speaker insisted that due process must be followed.
Leaked Letter Adds Fuel to Fire
“It is true that I have resigned as the Githurai MCA,” Mwangi said. “Unfortunately, the letter leaked before the Speaker received it. I’ve tried to reach him for three days without success,” he added.
Despite the confusion, Mwangi maintained that he would formalize his resignation once he meets the Speaker.
Frustration Over County Neglect
Mwangi, a member of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), cited deep frustrations with the Nairobi County Executive. He accused the leadership of failing to implement development projects and ignoring basic service delivery in Githurai.
“My ward has been consistently neglected despite my efforts in the Assembly and committees,” Mwangi lamented.

His resignation, though unofficial, has stirred debate over governance and accountability in Nairobi.
What the Law Says About MCA Resignation
Under Article 194(1)(d) of the Constitution of Kenya, an MCA must submit a signed resignation letter to the Speaker. The Speaker then declares the seat vacant and notifies the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
“Until the Speaker accepts the resignation, the MCA remains in office,” a legal expert explained.
Political Fallout Looms
Mwangi’s move could trigger political battles, especially if linked to party loyalty or defection. Meanwhile, residents of Githurai are left wondering who will represent them moving forward.
“We need clarity. Our ward deserves leadership,” said a concerned voter.
