Relief for Teachers as TSC Unveils New Premium SHA Medical Cover

Teachers across Kenya are set to receive a major boost in healthcare access. The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a transition to a new medical insurance scheme under the Social Health Authority (SHA), effective December 1, 2025.

A New Chapter in Teachers’ Healthcare

The announcement comes as the current private insurance contract nears expiry. TSC confirmed that all teachers will be enrolled in the Public Service Fund, which offers a premium SHA medical cover.

“Teachers will enjoy enhanced benefits under the new premium SHA scheme,” TSC stated.

This premium package goes beyond the basic SHA benefits offered to other public officers. It promises broader coverage, faster access to services, and improved support for chronic conditions.

Why the Shift Matters

For years, teachers have voiced frustrations over delayed claims, limited hospital access, and poor service under the previous insurer. Now, many see this move as long overdue.

“We’ve waited for a scheme that truly values our health. This is a step in the right direction,” said a teacher from Kisumu.

The new cover aims to eliminate bottlenecks and ensure teachers receive timely medical attention. Moreover, it aligns with the government’s push for universal health coverage.

What the Premium SHA Offers

According to TSC, the premium SHA cover will include:

  • Comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services
  • Maternity and dental care
  • Mental health support
  • Chronic illness management
  • Emergency evacuation services

“This scheme supplements and extends beyond core SHA benefits. Teachers deserve nothing less,” TSC emphasized.

Additionally, the Public Service Fund will streamline contributions, making the system more transparent and accountable.

Teachers React with Hope and Caution

While many welcomed the news, some urged TSC to ensure smooth implementation.

“We’ve seen good plans fail due to poor execution. Let’s get this right,” warned a Nairobi-based teacher.

Others called for clear communication on how the transition will affect existing claims and hospital partnerships.

“We need clarity. Will our preferred hospitals still accept the new cover?” asked a teacher in Eldoret.

Countdown to Change Begins

With the December deadline approaching, TSC has promised to release detailed guidelines soon. Teachers are encouraged to stay informed and prepare for the transition.

“This is about dignity and care. We’re committed to making it work,” TSC concluded.

As the education sector braces for change, teachers finally have something to look forward to—better health, better service, and renewed hope
