Slain Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu Was Drowning in Debt, Faced Legal Battles Before His Murder

New revelations have painted a troubling picture of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu’s final days. Despite his respected career, Mbobu was battling mounting debts, court judgments, and financial ruin before his brutal murder on September 9.

According to sources close to the investigation, Mbobu had been blacklisted by several banks. He had turned to shylocks and credit companies for survival. His borrowing habits spiraled out of control.

“Most of the loans were inflated up to ten times the original amount,” a source familiar with the case disclosed.

In 2019, Mbobu borrowed Ksh10 million from a shylock. Although he made payments totaling Ksh24 million over two years, the debt ballooned to Ksh72 million. Eventually, he stopped paying.

His financial troubles didn’t end there. In 2023, a religious organization hired him to oversee the sale of two prime parcels of land in Karen worth Ksh250 million. The full amount was deposited into his company account.

However, Mbobu only released Ksh153 million. He withheld Ksh97 million, prompting the organization to sue.

“Justice Francis Gikonyo ruled that Mbobu must return the Ksh97 million and accrued interest,” court documents revealed.

The court allowed him to retain just Ksh8.7 million as legal fees. But even after the ruling, his problems escalated.

A Somali shylock who had lent him Ksh17 million also came forward. In another case from August last year, a client sued Mbobu over Ksh40 million awarded through arbitration. The funds were sent to his firm but never released.

“He was overwhelmed. The debts kept piling. He couldn’t keep up,” a close associate said.

On the night of September 9, unknown assailants shot Mbobu eight times along Magadi Road. He was heading home after meetings in the CBD. The attack occurred during a traffic jam.

Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor confirmed the cause of death.

“Mbobu died from excessive bleeding. The shooting was intentional and done at close range,” Oduor stated.

His death has left the legal community shaken. Many are now questioning whether his financial woes played a role in his murder.

“This was not random. It looks calculated,” said one senior lawyer.
