The grief in Koguta village, Nyakach Sub-county, is heavy. Twenty-six lives were lost in a devastating bus crash in Kisumu.

The government has now stepped in, pledging to cover all funeral costs for the victims.

Full Support for Bereaved Families

Vincent Kodera, chairperson of the funeral committee, confirmed that the state will meet all expenses.

“The government will cover the programme, including mortuary bills, coffins, and transport,” he said.

He added that medical bills for the 26 survivors admitted to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital will also be paid.

However, he painted a grim picture of the situation.

“Some homes have been wiped clean, leaving children without parents. The pay bill will help support families during and after burial,” Kodera stated.

The pay bill number, 8010747, has been opened to raise additional funds.

Final Journey for the Victims

The requiem mass will be held on Thursday at Naki AIC Church in Nyakach. Bodies will then be transported to Koguta for a night vigil on Friday.

On Saturday, August 16, the funeral service will take place at Naki Primary School before the victims are laid to rest.

Leaders Console and Call for Caution

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o sent a heartfelt condolence message to the bereaved families.

“On behalf of the County Government of Kisumu, we condole with the bereaved and offer our prayers to those who sustained injuries and continue to receive medical attention,” Nyong’o said.

He assured families that his office is coordinating with authorities to provide all necessary support.

“We stand with the people of Nyakach and Nyahura during this trying moment. We urge caution on our roads,” he added.

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga also joined in mourning. She stood alongside Nyong’o, offering comfort to the affected families and urging drivers to prioritise safety.

A Community in Mourning

As preparations continue, Nyakach is united in grief and support. The loss has touched every corner of the community, with neighbours stepping in to help.

Government support offers relief, but the emotional wounds will take far longer to heal. The night vigils, prayers, and the final burial rites will be moments of shared pain—and shared strength.

On Saturday, Koguta will stand together to bid farewell to its fallen sons and daughters. The tragedy has shaken the region, but it has also reminded Kenyans of the need for unity in sorrow and vigilance on the road.
