“Release Her Now!”: Kanini Kega Defends Rose Njeri, Threatens Action Over Arrest
Tension is rising fast after EALA MP Kanini Kega strongly condemned the arrest of digital activist Rose Njeri Tunguru.
The legislator, known for his sharp political stance, demanded Njeri’s unconditional release, warning that action would follow if ignored.
In a bold social media post on Monday, June 2, Kega declared:
“Release Rose Njeri Tunguru now unconditionally. She is not a felon. If not, tomorrow we will be there very early in the morning.”
Who Is Rose Njeri and Why Was She Arrested?
Rose Njeri, a vocal activist, was arrested on Sunday, May 30, after developing an online tool that helped citizens object to the Finance Bill 2025.
Her arrest sparked outrage across the country. Many Kenyans felt the government was cracking down on free speech.
According to reports, Njeri was held over the long weekend since Monday was a public holiday, meaning her arraignment would only happen on Tuesday.
Support From High Places
Kega’s message stood out. Very few elected leaders have publicly supported Njeri.
But he’s not alone. Former Public Service CS Justin Muturi also condemned the arrest.

“She only exercised her constitutional freedom of expression through her platform,”
said Muturi on Monday.
In addition, former DP Rigathi Gachagua took to social media hours earlier. He accused the Kenya Kwanza government of trying to intimidate the youth into silence.

Kega’s Warning Not Empty
Kega’s threats shouldn’t be brushed off. Known for his firm stances, he has previously challenged the Kenya Kwanza regime, despite once being aligned with it.
Interestingly, Gachagua once admitted he and President Ruto helped Kega get elected to EALA, despite their political differences.
“I told the leaders from the mountain to vote for Kanini Kega,”
Gachagua said in 2022.“He insulted me and Ruto, but I asked them to support him anyway.”
Now, Kega has flipped the script. He is openly challenging the same administration he once benefitted from.
Justice or Intimidation?
To many Kenyans, Rose Njeri’s case feels like a test of democracy. Can citizens speak up against government policies without fear?
As her arraignment looms, pressure on the government is intensifying. Civil society groups, youth movements, and now, sitting MPs, are all demanding transparency and accountability.

Will the government back down? Or will it dig in deeper?
One thing is clear: the clock is ticking.
