Trans Nzoia Governor details painful arrest, ransacked home, and emotional toll

Tears welled in Governor George Natembeya’s eyes as he relived his arrest by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers last week.

Speaking to supporters during a tour in Western Kenya, the Trans Nzoia boss shared details of a traumatizing early-morning raid on his Nairobi home.

“I had just travelled for a meeting in Nairobi. It was postponed. I decided to rest,” he began emotionally.

Suddenly, around 6 am, a loud doorbell jolted him from sleep.

“I looked out the window. Over ten men stood there. They said they were EACC officers,” Natembeya recounted.

Dragged Like a Thief, Denied a Lawyer

Moments later, chaos erupted.

Officers burst into his house, turning everything upside down. The governor claimed he didn’t know what they were after.

“They combed every room. They didn’t even tell me what they were looking for,” he added.

Things quickly escalated.

“They told an AP officer to handcuff me. I refused. I asked for a warrant. They didn’t show it.”

“One officer grabbed me, lifted me, and threw me into their car,” Natembeya revealed.

The governor said he was driven straight to EACC headquarters and held for more than three hours without access to a lawyer or family.

“They Treated Me Like a Convicted Man”

At Integrity Centre, Governor Natembeya said he was locked up without knowing the charges.

“I was kept incommunicado. My wife broke down. They ransacked our house like I was a terrorist,” he said.

According to the former Rift Valley Regional Commissioner, this was the worst humiliation he had faced in his public life.

“I’ve never had audit issues in all my years in public service. Yet, they treated me like a criminal,” he added.

Only at 7 pm did an OCS arrive to caution and charge him, marking the first time he understood why he had been detained.

Court Drama and Public Support

Natembeya was later arraigned in court. He faced charges tied to procurement irregularities, bribery, and abuse of office. He was freed on KSh500,000 bail.

“We know what’s happening. But I will not be broken. I’m not a thief,” he vowed, to cheers in Kitale.

Supporters believe the arrest was politically motivated, and many have called for reforms in EACC operations.
