Outcry After Lion Kills Girl in Kajiado: Locals Demand Action, Protection from Wildlife
A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the Emakoko village in Kajiado County. A lioness from the nearby Nairobi National Park mauled and killed 14-year-old Peace Mwende, leaving a family in anguish and a community gripped by fear.
A Normal Evening Turns Into a Nightmare
The day began like any other. Peace and her two siblings were inside their house when the lioness struck. Their father, Kennedy Kigen, was nearby when he heard piercing screams.
“I was nearby when I heard screams from the compound,” Kigen painfully recalled. “On checking, I was shocked to see it was my child being dragged by the lioness. Our attempts to rescue her were unsuccessful.”
Despite their desperate efforts, they could not save young Peace.
The Lion Entered the House
Shockingly, the lioness managed to jump over a makeshift fence before entering the family’s home.

“The lioness came to this homestead at around 7pm and found three children in the house,” explained Charles Romo, a village elder. “Soon after, it caught one child and dragged her to the river.”
The community searched throughout the night, but the recovery ended in heartbreak.
“We stumbled upon her lifeless body, which was 80 per cent eaten,” Romo added, his voice trembling.
Wildlife Authorities Respond
Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) confirmed the horrifying event. In their statement, they revealed that the lioness had strayed from the southern edge of the Nairobi National Park and entered Savannah Ranch.
Outrage and Demands for Action
The incident has ignited national outrage and demands for immediate intervention.
“They should just help,” Kigen pleaded. “It is the life of my child that has been ended in a very unfortunate manner.”
Local residents are now calling for the government to build an electric fence along the game corridor that stretches from Kitengela to Kajiado.
They argue that human-wildlife conflict is on the rise, and more families are at risk.
Videos obtained by local media show the lioness still roaming the area—yet to be captured by KWS officers.

A Wake-Up Call
Peace’s death has left more than a grieving family. It has left an entire village traumatized and demanding justice.
If nothing is done soon, many fear that Peace won’t be the last.
