Ruto Breaks Silence on Butere Girls’ Controversial Play “Echoes of War”

President William Ruto has finally addressed the storm surrounding Butere Girls’ play Echoes of War. Speaking on Sunday, April 13, the Head of State touched on the controversy that sparked nationwide debate and emotional uproar over freedom of expression in schools.

Ruto Speaks on Nurturing All Talents

While addressing a public gathering, Ruto emphasized his administration’s commitment to supporting children in all areas—academics, arts, and sports.

“Every child, formal education, technical education, the creative industry, arts and sports—we must give our children the best array and buffet of what they can be,” he declared.
“Those who are good in academics, others are good in sports, others are good in creative economy, others are good in arts. We must, as a nation, and my administration is going to make sure that our children get the best. And we must support them.”

His words offered hope to many young learners pursuing artistic dreams. However, his speech took a sharp turn when he addressed the play’s controversial message.

Indirect Swipe at Cleophas Malala?

Though Ruto didn’t mention names, he appeared to take a jab at Cleophas Malala, the former Kakamega senator and playwright behind Echoes of War.

The play had received heavy criticism from government quarters for allegedly painting Ruto’s regime in a negative light. Its themes mirrored the frustrations of Kenya’s Gen Z during recent nationwide protests.

In a stern tone, Ruto stated:

“We must equally protect all our children from pedophiles, from drug peddlers, and from those who want to corrupt our children and teach them to hate their parents, their teachers, their leaders, or their nation. We must protect our children from those ones.”

Balancing Freedom and Protection

Ruto’s remarks reflect a delicate balance. On one hand, he calls for support of talents. On the other, he warns against people who, in his view, abuse platforms like drama festivals to indoctrinate learners.

Still, his comments sparked more questions than answers. Can students critique the government through art? Should schools censor creativity in the name of patriotism?

A Nation Divided by a Play

Echoes of War was more than a drama—it was a mirror to society. It exposed generational frustrations and ignited vital conversations about youth, governance, and freedom.

Ruto’s statement may have ended silence at the top, but for many, the debate is just beginning.
