Al-Shabaab Attack on Mandera Police Camp Repelled as Security Forces Avert Major Security Breach
The attempted assault targeted the Jabi Quick Response Unit (QRU) Camp in Lafey Sub-County, a key security outpost that plays a critical role in counterterrorism operations and border surveillance in the region.
According to preliminary police reports, the attack occurred shortly after 7:00 pm when a group of heavily armed militants approached the camp from the north-eastern direction and opened fire on officers stationed at the facility.
Security sources indicated that the attackers, estimated to be about ten in number, launched the assault from a distance of approximately 600 metres, apparently seeking to test the camp’s defensive capabilities before attempting a possible advance.

“The officers responded promptly and effectively, successfully repelling the attackers and securing the installation,” a security source familiar with the incident said.
Residents living near the camp reported hearing heavy gunfire during the confrontation, with the sounds echoing across nearby villages and pastoral settlements. The incident briefly sparked fear among local communities, many of whom have experienced similar security threats in recent years.
Despite the intensity of the confrontation, authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported among security personnel or civilians.
The attackers eventually retreated under unclear circumstances, abandoning their apparent mission after failing to penetrate the camp’s defensive perimeter.
“There were no reported fatalities or injuries following the attack. Security agencies have since secured the area and commenced follow-up operations,” police officials indicated.
Following the incident, standard security lockdown procedures were immediately activated at the facility as officers conducted assessments and strengthened defensive positions.
Additional security personnel were also deployed to the area as authorities launched investigations aimed at determining the exact circumstances surrounding the attack and identifying those responsible.

The latest incident underscores the persistent security challenges facing border communities despite years of intensified military operations by Kenyan security agencies.
According to police reports, suspected armed militia crossed into Kenya from Somalia during the early hours of June 8 and launched an attack on Elgolicha village near the international border.
The assailants reportedly stormed the village at around 3:00 am and opened fire on residents before fleeing back across the border.
Another victim, identified as Ibrahim Issack, was also fatally shot during the attack.
The back-to-back incidents have renewed concerns over security along Kenya’s northeastern frontier, where authorities continue to face threats from terrorist groups, armed militias, and criminal networks operating across porous border zones.
“Security agencies remain vigilant and committed to protecting residents and safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity,” a senior security official said.
