Magadi Women’s League Members Threaten to Boycott 2027 Election Over Internal Election Delay

Tensions are rising in Magadi after a section of women threatened to boycott the 2027 General Election following delays in conducting long-awaited internal elections for the Magadi Women’s League.

The group, which had scheduled its elections for Monday, March 30, expressed frustration after government officials failed to show up to oversee the process, despite prior assurances. The planned vote was expected to mark the league’s first formal leadership election in 28 years.

Members say the delay has left them without a legitimate leadership structure, limiting their ability to advocate for their rights and engage effectively with authorities and development stakeholders.

“We registered ourselves as the Magadi Women’s League, and that is why we came here to vote. No person can stop these elections; the only person who can stop them is a member of the league,” one of the women said during a gathering.

Another member issued a more direct warning, linking the unresolved issue to broader political participation in the upcoming national polls.

“We are not going for elections until the government gives us what we want. We want to vote because we are tired of being mistreated,” she said.

The women argue that the absence of elected leadership has contributed to persistent social challenges in the region, including gender-based violence and marginalisation. They believe that a structured and recognised leadership would strengthen their ability to address these issues and push for policy interventions.

“The reason why we are pushing for these elections is that we want our rights. We are being mistreated and not being recognised in society,” another member stated, adding that the group still hopes the elections will eventually take place.

The standoff has potential political implications for major parties operating in Kajiado County, including the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), both of which command significant support in the region.

ODM’s influence in the county has been bolstered by Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, while UDA maintains a strong legislative presence, including representation in Parliament and the Senate. Analysts warn that a boycott by organised grassroots groups, particularly women, could disrupt voter turnout patterns and reshape local political dynamics ahead of the polls.

The developments come at a time when preparations for the 2027 General Election are intensifying nationwide. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) recently launched the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise, aimed at increasing the number of registered voters across the country.

The 30-day registration drive, which began on March 30 and runs until April 28, is being conducted daily across Huduma Centres, constituency offices, and selected educational institutions. The exercise targets millions of eligible voters, particularly young people, many of whom are registering for the first time.\

Parallel to this, civic initiatives such as the “NikoKadi” campaign have gained traction, mobilising youth to obtain national identification documents and participate in the electoral process.

However, the warning from the Magadi Women’s League underscores lingering governance and representation challenges at the grassroots level, even as national electoral preparations gather pace.

Observers note that failure to address the concerns raised by the group could erode trust in public institutions and weaken civic engagement in marginalised communities.

As the situation unfolds, attention is likely to shift to government agencies and local administrators to clarify the reasons behind the delay and outline steps to facilitate the long-overdue elections.

For the women of Magadi, the demand remains clear: representation, recognition, and the right to organise—factors they say will ultimately determine their participation in the country’s democratic process.
