Moses Wetang’ula Congratulates Oburu after Being Ratified as ODM Party Leader: “Wishing You Wisdom”
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has congratulated Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga following his formal ratification as party leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), marking a significant transition in the party’s leadership after the death of longtime chief Raila Odinga.
Oburu’s elevation was confirmed on Friday, March 27, during the party’s Special Delegates Convention (SDC) held at the ASK Grounds Jamhuri Park. He had been serving in an acting capacity following his nomination by the party’s National Governing Council (NGC) in the months after Odinga’s passing on October 15, 2025.
In a statement released shortly after the announcement, Wetang’ula described Oburu’s ratification as a pivotal moment for the party, linking it to continuity of leadership following the late Odinga’s tenure.

“Warm congratulations to Oburu Oginga, Senator for Siaya County, on his ratification by the Special Delegates Convention as the new party leader. This milestone marks a defining moment of continuity and renewal, as you step forward to the leadership of the party following the illustrious legacy of the late Raila Odinga,” Wetang’ula said.
“Your wealth of experience, calm stewardship, and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals position you well to guide the party into its next chapter… Wishing you wisdom, strength and great success in this new role,” he added.
Oburu’s confirmation comes at a time when ODM is grappling with internal divisions and a broader realignment of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 General Election. His leadership is expected to play a crucial role in stabilising the party and navigating ongoing factional disputes.
During the same SDC, delegates approved key changes to the party’s leadership structure. Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir were endorsed as deputy party leaders, reflecting an effort to consolidate regional representation within ODM’s top ranks.
Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who also serves as the party’s National Chairperson, formally pronounced several resolutions adopted during the conference, including the filling of leadership vacancies.
Among the notable developments was the sanctioning of the removal of Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi as deputy party leader, a move initially proposed by the NGC in November. The matter will now proceed to the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) for further deliberation and final determination.

Siaya senator Oburu Oginga said he intervened to try help Raphael Tuju out of his current predicament.
The SDC also addressed ongoing disputes surrounding ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna. Party officials indicated that discussions on his future would take into account a recent ruling by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), which nullified an earlier attempt to remove him from office.
As Oburu assumes full leadership, attention will focus on whether he can unify competing factions, rebuild party cohesion, and position ODM as a formidable force in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.

Further developments are expected as the party’s governing organs meet to implement the resolutions and address outstanding leadership disputes.
