ODM Gives Gift Hampers to Early Arrivals Ahead of Special Delegates Conference

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has intensified mobilisation efforts ahead of its highly anticipated Special Delegates Conference, with early arrivals receiving gift hampers in a move that has drawn both attention and debate within political circles.

The conference, held amid an escalating internal leadership contest, is widely viewed as a defining moment for the party as it prepares for the 2027 General Election. Rival factions have been competing for influence over the party’s future direction following the death of longtime leader Raila Odinga in October 2025.

On Friday, March 27, delegates began arriving at the venue in the early morning hours, signalling the significance of the gathering. Observers described a charged but orderly atmosphere as supporters streamed in, many wearing party colours and chanting slogans associated with their respective camps.

The internal contest pits two major factions against each other: one operating under the “Linda Ground” banner linked to Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, and another aligned with ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna under the “Linda Mwananchi” slogan.

In a development that quickly attracted public attention, ODM deployed teams of young volunteers to distribute gift hampers to delegates who arrived early. The packages, handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, appeared to contain party-branded merchandise, though officials did not immediately disclose their full contents.

Witnesses said the distribution points were set up near entry areas, where youths wearing ODM insignia coordinated the exercise while guiding delegates into the venue.

A video clip circulating widely on social media showed supporters receiving the hampers and celebrating the gesture, with some chanting party slogans and expressing optimism about the conference outcomes.

Political commentator and ODM supporter Gabriel Oguda shared footage of the distribution, describing it as part of the party’s grassroots mobilisation strategy led by a youthful team.

“Ukifika mapema unapata gift hamper yako polite from our GenZ team on site. Password ni Chama Kubwa. SISI NDIO OBURU,” Oguda wrote in a social media post accompanying the video, reflecting enthusiasm among supporters aligned with the Linda Ground faction.

The giveaways have sparked mixed reactions, with supporters viewing them as a morale-boosting gesture, while critics question whether such incentives could influence internal party processes.

Party officials have not issued a formal statement on the hampers but have emphasised that the conference is intended to chart ODM’s path forward following months of uncertainty and factional disputes.

Analysts say the high turnout and visible mobilisation underscore the stakes involved, as the conference is expected to address leadership questions, organisational restructuring, and strategy for the next electoral cycle.

Security presence at the venue was noticeable but not disruptive, with officers deployed to maintain order as large crowds gathered. No major incidents had been reported at the time of publication.

The Special Delegates Conference comes at a critical juncture for ODM, which for nearly two decades relied on Odinga as its central unifying figure. His absence has exposed underlying tensions and competing ambitions among senior party figures.

Political observers note that the outcome of the conference could reshape Kenya’s opposition landscape, influencing alliances, policy positions, and electoral strategies ahead of 2027.

As proceedings continue, attention remains fixed on whether the party can emerge with a unified leadership structure or whether the divisions on display will deepen further.
