MTRH Responds to Viral Claims: “No Mothers Detained, No Leftovers Served”
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has broken its silence following a viral TikTok video and a damning exposé by Daily Nation. The reports alleged that new mothers were being detained over unpaid Social Health Authority (SHA) fees and served leftover food at the Riley Mothers and Baby Hospital Wing in Eldoret.
Hospital Denies Detention Allegations
On Friday, September 19, MTRH issued a firm statement denying the claims. The hospital clarified that no mother had been unlawfully detained.
“All mothers are receiving care. None have been held due to unpaid SHA premiums,” said MTRH CEO Philip Kirwa.
He explained that delays in discharge were often due to incomplete SHA registration. Missing IDs, birth certificates, or unpaid premiums were the main causes.

“We urge patients to register for SHA early to avoid disruptions,” Kirwa added.
Viral Video Sparks Outrage
“The videos offer a glimpse into a world most never see… where mothers remain trapped not by medical necessity, but by unpaid bills,” the article read.
One mother, Melvin Nyagoha, shared her experience.
“We sleep in shifts. Sometimes three people share one bed. We have no diapers, no soap, no money,” she said.
MTRH Dismisses Claims of Leftover Meals
Kirwa also addressed the food quality concerns. He firmly denied that patients were served leftovers.
“All meals, supplies, and services meet required quality standards,” he stated.

Overcrowding Linked to Referral Pressure
MTRH explained that many patients arrive from lower-level facilities that lack capacity. This increases pressure on space and resources.
“Congestion may occur when patients haven’t completed SHA enrolment. We’re working with the Ministry of Health to ease this,” Kirwa noted.
Despite the hospital’s defense, the public remains divided. Some demand accountability, while others call for better funding and support.
“We need more beds, more staff, and better systems. Mothers deserve dignity,” said a local health advocate.

As the debate continues, MTRH promises to improve services and restore public trust.
